Case Study: Using Social Media for Social Impact

A tragedy led Ali Joy to launch an initiative to educate others to prevent the same type of tragedy from happening to them.

Ali lost her husband, Austin, to a rip current Father’s Day weekend of 2018 while visiting Atlantic Beach in North Carolina. Ali and her twin daughters were caught in the same rip current that took Austin’s life, and yet they survived as a result of some advice they received from four marines. The marines instructed them to float on their backs, buying them precious time until they could be safely rescued, brought to shore on surfboards.

That advice – which differs from the message that is ingrained in so many of our minds to” swim parallel to the shore” – is the one Ali wanted to share with others. Ali called on Benecomms to help with the campaign, which included messaging, social media and earned media.

What began as a simple Facebook page and a PR campaign aimed at helping Ali to tell her story and to bring context and nuance to an issue that is often over-simplified has since become a community of people who are reaching out to Ali daily with messages, encouragement, as well as personal stories and are sharing the content extensively. Reporters are reaching out through the page, asking for interviews.

Benecomms helped to construct the directive for the campaign: Bring a Float, Grab a Float, Be a Float, as well as to create the Facebook page and arrange for interviews with media including WRAL, the NBC-affiliated television station in Raleigh, NC. Today, the Facebook page continues to receive new followers weekly – page likes are currently upwards of 3,000 – and beaches in North Carolina and beyond have posted signs bearing Ali’s message to bring a float, grab a float, and be a float.
